Differential Diagnosiss
The first step in determining the proper course of treatment is making a differential diagnosis of the deformity. A clear distinction needs to be made between a head deformed by external forces (deformation plagiocephaly) from one that has been deformed by craniosynostosis. It is generally accepted that a careful clinical examination of the head shape is sufficient to differentiate between craniosynostosis and deformational plagiocephaly. [Click here for more information.]   When the diagnosis remains questionable either a skull X-ray series or computed tomography (CT) with bone windows may be used to resolve the issue. If questions persist regarding the diagnosis, a pediatric neurosurgeon or craniofacial surgeon should be consulted. [You can find a list of parent recommended physicians here.]
